Summer movies: Which ones will be worth seeing?

By Liz Wilson

Summer is almost here and the blockbusters are coming! Several action flicks and comedies are to be featured, however, many new films involve capes and spandex, so watch out! Read ahead to catch a glimpse of what movies are coming up and which ones you don’t want to miss.

5 Movies everyone is waiting for:

“The Avengers”

Coming: May 4th

Plot: Potentiallythe first of the summer blockbusters, this film combines all the Marvel superheroes together to fight one great evil. The list includes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), many who we’ve seen before in their own feature films. New actors have been recruited to fill vacancies, like Mark Ruffalo, the third actor to play the Hulk in 10 years, which may not be a good sign. How hard is it to get someone to play a not-so-jolly green giant?

Why everyone will see it: This movie will be popular because it has the largest cast of unique superheroes that we’ve seen in a long time. About a dozen famous and very attractive actors will appear, an appeal to audience members of all genders. For example, there is Scarlett Johansson for the fellas and Chris Evans for the ladies.

My Prediction: I think the cast may be the downfall of this movie — too many cooks in the kitchen. More isn’t always better when it comes to stars in ensemble cast films, but I’m sure it will be popular enough to make a decent dent in the summer movie scene. It will feature intense action scenes and pretty people but a lame plot. I predict a C for this movie.

“The Dark Knight Rises”

Coming: July 20th

Plot: After an eight-year hiatus, Batman returns to protect the city that still views him as a criminal. The villains in this installment of director Christopher Nolan’s trilogy include Catwoman and Bane.

Why everyone will see it: It’s Batman! In my opinion, Nolan’s version of the caped crusader is the best developed of the superhero movies. Nolan has done a fantastic job of creating an enticing trio of films that bring the Batman to life. This is a highly anticipated film as it is said to be the last of Nolan’s trilogy. The stars include Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway (“The Devil Wears Prada”), Michael Caine (“The Prestige”), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Inception”) and Tom Hardy (“Warrior”).

My Prediction: I predict this film will be just as popular as the first two and even more intense and gripping. This one is a must see. The last two Batman movies have had fantastic special effects, unexpected plot twists and a stellar cast. This movie looks to be following the same crowd-pleasing pattern. I predict an A.

“Snow White and the Huntsman”

Coming: June 1st

Plot: This movie is a modern interpretation of the classic Snow White fairy tale. Snow White is played by Kristen Stewart and the evil queen by Charlize Theron. This retelling is more real and dark than the traditional Disney story. There seems to be no singing birds or happy squirrels in this version.

Why everyone will see it: Kristen Stewart is still riding the “Twilight” wave of popularity, which won’t last too much longer, so fans of that series are bound to want to see her in action in another role. Charlize Theron will also draw a band of loyal fans to her latest film.

Prediction: The special effects look awesome even in the preview, but the question still remains if their new rendition of the film will give something new and unexpected to the story. B+.

“Brave”

Coming: June 22nd

Plot: Pixar’s newest 3-D animated film in which the main character, princess Merida of Scotland, is determined to make her own path in life and uses her archery skills to break tradition. Merida is voiced by Kelly MacDonald, who was most recently in Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Part-2.

Why everyone will see it: Pixar films are popular with kids and adults. These animated films are funny, clever and entertaining for the whole family.

Prediction: This film should be just as popular as other Pixar films like “Monsters, Inc.” and “Up.” The preview alone made me laugh and I love the Pixar animating style. I’m predicting an A.

“Men in Black III”

Coming: May 25th

Plot: In this sequel, Agent J (Will Smith) travels back in time to the 1960’s to prevent the assassination of his partner, Agent K.

Why everyone will see it: Will Smith is a dynamic actor who can draw a crowd. Movies like “I, Robot” and the first two “Men in Black” movies were huge hits and this installment should be just as popular.

Prediction: I think Will Smith will be able to pull off another hit with enough action and comedy for everyone. I predict a solid B.

5 Films You May Not Have Heard of But You Really Should See

“Pirates! Band of Misfits”

Coming: April 27th

Plot: The studio that brought us “Wallace and Gromit” has created another visually stunning stop-motion piece. A crew of amateur pirates tries to plunder enough ships to earn their pirate captain the Pirate of the Year Award. Starring Hugh Grant and Salma Hayek.

Why you should see it: The sheer amount of effort put into this films alone makes it worth seeing. According to the films’ production blog, this stop-motion animation took the production team at Aardman 20 months to complete! And if it’s as funny and charming as “Chicken Run,” it’s worth your time too!

Prediction: This should be funny for the kids and the parents alike. A solid A.

“Dark Shadows”

Coming: May 11th

Plot: Johnny Depp stars in another Tim Burton creation. Based on the gothic soap opera of the same name, Dark Shadows features a unique cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green (Casino Royale) and Helena Bonham Carter. Depp plays a 200-year-old vampire who wakes up in the 1960’s, where he finds his descendents living in the shambles of his family mansion.

Why you should see it: It’s dark and creepy, yet it looks hilarious. If you can recognize the brilliance behind Tim Burton’s macabre film style, you will often be rewarded with a stellar cult classic that everyone will be jealous you saw first.

Prediction: As long as it doesn’t creep people out too much, I see this being another Burton triumph, worth an A.

“Rock of Ages”

Coming: June 15th

Plot: This movie is based on the Tony-nominated Broadway musical. It’s set in 1987 Los Angeles where a young couple follows their dreams to Southern California but each falls in love with one someone else. This musical features the music of Styx, Twisted Sister, Journey, Poison and Foreigner. Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Brand all add a unique flair to this musical.

Why you should see it: It’s 80’s glam bands at their most ridiculous. There’s lots of hairspray, leather and air-guitaring. Tom Cruise plays the legendary Stacee Jaxx, a fictitious bandleader whom everyone worships. Picture Tom Cruise with shoulder length hair and leather pants. Need I say more?

Prediction: Catchy music will be the propeller for this movie. I’m not sure the plot is unique enough, but I predict a B.

“Bernie

Coming: April 27th [Limited Release]

Plot: This movie will be limited release, but I suggest you go search it out, or look for it on DVD. Jack Black stars in a satirical comedy about a southern mortician who befriends the town’s crotchety old widow. She is later murdered and sweet little Jack Black does everything he can to pretend she’s still alive.

Why you should see it: Jack Black is always hilarious. This time, it appears to be more subtle, but just as fun. Matthew McConaughey plays the suspicious sheriff, which is why all the ladies may want to see this one, although I don’t know how they can write in a shirtless scene for a law abiding Texas sheriff. The mystery of how that will happen is another great reason to go see the film.

Prediction: ??

“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”

Coming: May 4th

Plot: A group of British retirees are enticed to move to India to live out the rest of their retirement. They believe the luxury Marigold Hotel will provide them with every comfort, but the brochure proves deceiving.

Why you should see it: These British actors are brilliant, and they become even more so when in each other’s companies.  Starring Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy. It’s Professor McGonagall, James’s Bond’s “M,” Batman’s nemesis and Davey Jones all in one film!

Please comment on this article after you see any one of these films and let me know what you think!
